Bacteriologist Pavel Švec heads to Antarctica
In January 2026, Pavel Švec will travel to the Johann Gregor Mendel Czech Research Station on James Ross Island to expand our collection with bacterial isolates from lake sediments.
The Czech Collection of Microorganisms, which has been actively cooperating with the Czech Antarctic Research Programme (CARP) for more than a decade, will once again be represented on the polar scientific expedition this season.
On Saturday, 11 January 2025, our mycologist, Monika Laichmanová, Ph.D., and seven other expedition members will set off for the CZ*ECO Nelson base on Nelson Island in the South Shetland Archipelago. The main aim of her mission is to enrich our collection of microorganisms with new strains of microscopic fungi that she will isolate from rocks, soil and mosses as part of her taxonomic research.
We wish Monika and the entire team a successful expedition and a safe journey to Antarctica!
