Bacteriologist Pavel Švec heads to Antarctica

The Czech Collection of Microorganisms continues its long-standing collaboration with the Czech Antarctic Research Programme (CARP) and will once again take part in this season’s polar expedition.

In January 2026, our colleague Assoc. Prof. Pavel Švec, Ph.D. will travel to the Johann Gregor Mendel Czech Research Station on James Ross Island. His main task will be to collect new bacterial strains from lake sediments, thereby expanding our collection with additional unique psychrophilic microorganisms. These bacteria belong to the areas of his long-term taxonomic research.

We wish Pavel and the entire team a successful mission and a safe journey to Antarctica!
